Derby Pop Quiz #1

Time for a break in my Bench Talks…enough about what I think.

Let’s talk about Roller Derby.

This highly under-publicized and misunderstood sport is poised to roll out on the international sports stage in a big way.   Best you appear knowledgeable when it does!

It’s Back to School Time, so here is the first of a series of Pop Quizzes, designed to get you up to speed (so to speak).  I’ll take this first answer, then look for some of the officiating pros to answer the next ones.

Q:  “It appears that roller derby is sort of like pro wrestling.  If everyone is just trying to knock everyone else down, how do they keep score?”

A:  Oh, my dears.  Look closer.  While there is a lot of controlled and highly regulated shoving going on, there is truly a purpose.   Think football (although no one carries a ball), and the Quarterback Sneak play.

The Jammer, like the quarterback in football, uses the Blockers on her team to sneak through the lines of the opponent.  The first time she is able to do that, she gets an opportunity to speed around the track and do it again in order to score.  That’s called “lapping” the opponent and where the scores come from (in a pretty simplistic way).

Of course, it gets a little more complicated because each team has its own Jammer trying to get through.  And the blockers on each team are essentially playing Offense and Defense at the same time because everyone is headed in the same direction.

And to add another layer of complication, there are two jammers on each opposing team who can trade off that responsibility to each other during play by changing helmet covers.

But, that’s a good start for the pop quizzes.  And it will give you something to think about during football halftime commentary.

A Wing and a Prayer

I hear it all the time and I’m sure you do also.   “I’ll pray for you”.  “You are in my prayers”,  or just “prayers” that something turns out the way someone thinks it should.

While these are always welcome gestures, these prayers, I often wonder.  Will someone actually sit down and pray?  Is this another way of saying “With you, girl”?  Or, as I do sometimes suspect, does it make the offerer feel better that they have made a difference or can affect an outcome when perhaps they can not?

Or maybe all the above, and more?

People come into my space and say we will pray a certain way.  I go into their space and they say we will pray a certain way.  Some say they are praying that a certain thing happen a certain way.  Some say they just are praying.

Some just nod, saying nothing.  Is this a prayer of sorts?

Some prayers are done with eyes closed and hands clasped and archaic phrases.  Some are delivered five times a day on one’s knees with forehead touching the floor.

I’m thinking these prayers come in as many sizes and colors and personalities as derby rollers.  Some are deliberate and strong, a full-throated demand sent hurling into the ethers.  Some come in little, wispy emojis at the end of a social media post, slipping sweetly by in the midst of more bold statements.  Some are a team activity.  Some are solitary.

I’m not convinced anyone has an inside track.

Some have loud, colorful phrasing.  Some appear to be no more than a gentle doze.

This business of praying is worth some good bench talk and not to be taken for granted or given in passing.

Not that I happen to know, and people rarely ask me my thoughts about it, but perhaps what matters is not the color or size or wording of these thoughts.  What matters is that the ones with true intent are the ones that take wing, rising above the mishmash of other words to hit a target.

Word Count Words Count

Oh, how social media has changed the world!

The truncated sentences, the abbreviated words, the absolute disregard for punctuation– because, really, who wants to use up their prized allotment of characters with words that are spelled correctly?

Things have changed now that we have to count words or make sure the best ones appear above the “Read More” line.

World Cup? Roller Derby’s got one…

While you may be watching soccer or baseball today, this World Cup took place  in the UK.    Not only did teams from across the world compete, but 2018 saw the appearance of Team Indigenous…a group of skaters selected from countries without specific teams.    They used the platform to raise awareness and funds to fight abuse of women in these often unheard of nations.

(Spoiler….USA won.)

“Friendship Benches” in Zimbabwe

Maybe if the TV women who are calling another woman names would just sit down and talk with that woman, there would be a whole different kind of news report.
Benches, like roller derby, are global.  And the need to sit and talk on a bench equally transcends.   From the website “A Mighty Girl” comes this story.   Or check it out yourself at  Friendship Bench Project- Zimbabwe at http://www.friendshipbenchzimbabwe.org/

(Thanks to E for sharing this bench story!)
